Where to give blood in NYC

We're in the calm before the storm as we write this. That's going to change soon and the time to give blood is now. Here's where to do it:

New York Blood Center:

New York Blood Center (NYBC) is one of the largest independent, community-based, nonprofit blood centers in the United States and has several centers in New York. They're likely your best bet. Locations and hours are below:

Grand Central Donor Center, 200 Park Avenue at 44th Street (in the MetLife Building).

Port Authority Donor Center, 625 8th Avenue between 40th & 41st Streets.

Upper East Side Donor Center, 310 East 67th Street between 1st & 2nd Avenues.

Memorial Sloan Kettering Blood Donation Room:

1250 1st Avenue between 67th & 68th Streets.

Schedule an appointment to give blood by calling 212-639-8177 or 212-639-7648.

In general, they ask that all donors be in good health and at least 17 years old or under age 75 (or have parental or physician consent), weigh at least 110 pounds, and show picture identification. More info here:

Maimonides Blood Donor Center:

4802 Tenth Avenue, Administration Bldg - 3rd Floor, in Borough Park.

No appointments needed for whole blood donations.

Their requirements are kind of interesting, including that you not have spent time that adds up to three or more months in the United Kingdom between 1980-1996 and that you not have had a tattoo or body piercing within the last year. More info here:

Montefiore Medical Center:

111 E. 210th Street in the Bronx.

In general, they ask that all donors be in good health and at least 17 years old. More info here:

Hours: Not listed. Call for appointments.

 

American Red Cross:

Interestingly, the Red Cross isn't a major player in NYC. They do have a blood bank in the Bronx, though.

Hours: The website weirdly just shows available appointments for the day you visit the site, so we're not sure if these are every day's hours but on the date of this post (a Monday) they were available from 11 am to 5 pm.
