No day matches today, sadly (an ominous sign of impending winter but oh well). Nor are there any men's matches. It's lady's night.
First up, surprisingly, is Svitolina versus Serena, which we would have expected to be the 2nd match. Monfils' loss last yesterday dashed our hopes of a boyfriend-girlfriend pair both making the semis and so Elina will have to be the sole standard bearer for that relationship. Don't expect it to be a successful evening for her, though. The only person in the draw that can beat Serena now is Serena herself and, honestly, we don't think there's anyone that can push her hard enough to make even that a possibility.
Assuming we're right, the Bencic / Andreescu match is where we can expect the real fireworks. Both women are young (22 & 19, respectively), tough as nails & ultra competitive. There's not much between them right now, though we get the feeling Andreescu is going to use this US Open to proclaim herself the next star of women's tennis. Should be fun either way.
